TITLE Bhaaratamahaakaavy par jain darshan ka prabhaav: ek samaalochanaatmak avalokan
ABSTRACT The Indian epics, particularly the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, have profoundly influenced the cultural, ethical, and philosophical traditions of India. Embedded within these epics are ideas that resonate with various schools of thought, including Jain philosophy. This study presents a critical analysis of the influence of Jain principles—such as Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekantavada (doctrine of manifold viewpoints), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)—on the interpretations and retellings of these epics. It explores how Jain authors reinterpreted the characters, narratives, and values of the epics in alignment with their ethical and metaphysical doctrines, thereby creating alternative narrative traditions. The research further examines the dialogic interaction between epic literature and Jain philosophy, highlighting processes of cultural adaptation and religious synthesis. The paper argues that these Jain adaptations not only reflect the pluralistic nature of Indian thought but also contribute to promoting tolerance, ethical living, and intellectual diversity in Indian literary traditions. Based on primary texts, commentaries, and secondary scholarly works, this critical overview offers a comprehensive understanding of the Jain philosophical imprint on India’s great epics.
