| TITLE | An Efficient Approach to Forensic Investigation in Cloud using VM Snapshots: A Survey |
|---|---|
| ABSTRACT | Cloud computing has transformed modern computing and data storage practices, yet it presents unique challenges for digital forensic investigations due to its distributed architecture, multi-tenancy, and limited investigator control. Traditional forensic procedures based on physical access and disk acquisition are unsuitable in virtualized cloud environments. Virtual Machine (VM) snapshots offer a promising method to acquire forensic evidence without disrupting cloud services. This survey analyzes existing methods, tools, and models enabling forensic investigation using VM snapshots and evaluates their efficiency, reliability, scalability, and legal compliance. The study concludes that VM snapshot–based forensics, when combined with chain of custody management and automated recovery mechanisms, can serve as a scalable and minimally intrusive alternative to traditional forensic acquisition techniques. |
